How it works
MB = bytes ÷ 1,000,000 MiB = bytes ÷ 1,048,576
- MB (megabyte): the SI unit, 1,000² = 1,000,000 bytes
- MiB (mebibyte): the binary unit, 1,024² = 1,048,576 bytes
The two differ by about 4.9%, which is why the same file can show two different sizes.

When to use megabytes
Megabytes are the everyday unit for single files. Phone photos, PDFs, songs, and app updates are usually a few MB each. An MP3 at 128 kbps uses just under 1 MB per minute of audio.
Email services cap attachments in MB, and the limits are often around 20 to 25 MB. When a file is close to a limit, check which unit the service uses: a limit of 25 MB (decimal) is smaller than 25 MiB.
Limitations
- Negative values give an error.
- Results are rounded to 10 significant digits for display.
- A file's size on disk can be larger than its actual size, because disks store data in fixed-size blocks. This converter uses the actual size in bytes.

Why is my file's size different in Windows and macOS?
