How to use Whois Lookup

  1. Enter a domain name, such as example.com.
  2. Tick the robot check and press Check.
  3. Read the registrar, the statuses, the name servers, and the dates the registry returned.

How it works

This check runs on our server. The name is not stored.

The server asks the IANA bootstrap which registry publishes RDAP for that ending, then requests the domain object from that registry. The page lists the registrar entity, the status codes, the name servers, and the events for registration, expiration, and last change when those events exist.

Privacy services often replace the registrant's name and address with the registrar's proxy. The page shows what the registry returned, including that proxy.

Examples

  • A normal name shows a registrar, one or more status codes such as clientTransferProhibited, and the name servers.
  • A name registered this year shows a created date in that year and an expiration about a year later, when the registry sends both events.
  • A redacted record still has statuses and name servers, with the registrant shown as the privacy service.

Limitations

  • This is the registration record, not the DNS records. For A, MX, and the rest, use DNS Tools.
  • Some country-code endings return a short record, or none, over RDAP.
  • One name per check.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the old whois text on port 43?

No. The page reads the registry's RDAP JSON.

Why is the owner hidden?

The registrant chose a privacy service, or the registry redacts those fields. The tool does not have a second source for the hidden name.

Do you store the domains?

No.
