GPS speedometer not working in your browser? Check the status

For a GPS speedometer not working in your browser, check location permission and the status message first. An unavailable reading and a measured zero need different checks.

Separate blocked access from an unavailable speed

A browser speedometer can receive no location at all, receive a position without speed, or lose updates after you switch apps. Read the status and the time of the last reading before changing permissions or restarting a trip.

The browser's location interface can use several sources, including satellite and network-based location. Permission allows the browser to request a position; it does not force a particular GPS chip or guarantee a usable speed. The Geolocation specification also requires a secure context and distinguishes denied access from an unavailable position and a timeout.

Do these checks while safely stopped. A driver or boat operator should not adjust the page while moving. Keep the vehicle's instruments available; a browser reading is an estimate and is not a navigation or enforcement instrument.

GPS speedometer not working: match the message to the cause

Open Car Speedometer or Boat Speedometer directly at its HTTPS address in your main browser. Both use the same location-reading logic. The boat page also displays knots; switching pages does not bypass a blocked permission or improve the device's location data.

What the page showsWhat it means in these toolsWhat to check next
Start is unavailable, with an HTTPS or support messageThe page is not in a secure context, or this browser does not expose the required location function.Open the HTTPS page directly in a browser with location support.
Location blockedThe request was denied or access was revoked.Check this site's Location permission and the device's permission for the browser.
Location unavailableThe device did not provide a position, or the request timed out.Keep location services on and try a place with better reception while safely stopped.
Finding your speed, with --The page has no usable speed yet. A position can arrive without a speed value.Read the source, accuracy, and last-reading labels. A stationary check may remain unavailable if the device supplies no speed.
Waiting for reliable locationThe available data did not pass the tool's freshness or reliability checks.Wait for a fresh reading. Note the accuracy and age if the problem continues.
Updates pausedThe page is hidden in another tab or behind another app.Return to the page and allow a fresh reading to arrive.
Trip stoppedLocation tracking has ended.Press Start when you are ready to begin a new trip; the previous summary will be cleared.

When location permission is blocked

Open the site's controls or permissions near the address bar and check Location. Also check that the device's Location Services are on and that the browser is allowed to use them. Use precise location if your operating system offers that setting. Menu names differ between browsers and operating-system versions.

Return to the tool and press Start after changing a block. A permission prompt appears only when the browser needs to ask; an already allowed site can begin without another prompt. The tool cannot force a denied permission to reset. An embedded page may also be restricted by the host page's permissions policy, so open the tool directly before reporting a problem.

When the device gives a position but no speed

The browser's speed property can be null when the implementation cannot measure it. That is different from a reported speed of zero. Utilza accepts a valid device-reported zero, but displays -- when current speed is unavailable.

If the device supplies no speed, these tools can estimate it from accepted position changes. The current implementation needs readings at least two seconds apart and movement greater than the sum of their reported position errors. Readings older than ten seconds or with location accuracy worse than 50 meters are not used as current speed. These are the tools' filters, not a claim about your device's measured accuracy.

While stationary, a missing speed can remain -- because the fallback has no meaningful movement to measure. Check permission, status, and whether fresh positions arrive. Do not move a vehicle just to make a diagnostic value appear. At low speeds, position noise can also be larger than the movement being measured.

When readings disappear after switching apps

Utilza clears its location watch when the page becomes hidden and requests a fresh watch when you return. It does not provide continuous background tracking. Leaving the page stops tracking; returning after a screen lock or app switch does not turn a saved reading into a current one.

Collect browser details without sending a route

If the same problem returns, note the tool URL, exact status message, browser and operating-system versions, permission settings, whether the page was visible, and whether you were indoors or outdoors. Include the displayed accuracy and reading age if available. Those observations help distinguish an access problem from missing or stale data.

Open My User Agent to copy the browser string for the report. The guide to collecting browser details from a user-agent string explains its limits. The string is a compatibility hint that can be reduced or changed; it does not test GPS hardware or prove that a location reading is accurate.

You do not need to publish coordinates or a route to describe this problem. In these speedometer tools, coordinates and the trip summary stay in the tab's memory and are not sent to Utilza, saved in browser storage, or included in analytics events. Your browser and operating system may use their own location provider. The privacy policy separately explains ordinary site requests and external services.

Check a missing browser speed reading while safely stopped

  1. Stay safely stopped and open the car or boat speedometer directly over HTTPS in your main browser. Read the current status before changing any setting.
  2. If Location is blocked, allow it for this site and check the device's permission for the browser. Enable Location Services and precise access where available.
  3. Press Start and respond to a permission prompt if one appears. Keep the page visible and the screen awake while checking for a fresh reading.
  4. If the display stays at --, note whether the page has a recent position, its reported accuracy, and the source label. A missing native speed can stay unavailable while stationary.
  5. If updates paused after a tab change or screen lock, return to the page and wait for a fresh reading. Use Stop then Start only when you are ready to discard the earlier trip summary.
  6. If the issue persists, record the status, reading age, browser and OS versions, permissions, and indoor or outdoor conditions. Add the string from My User Agent if useful; omit coordinates and private details from screenshots.
  7. Press Stop to end location tracking. Use Reset trip, begin a new trip, or reload to clear the summary kept in that tab.

What these checks and browser readings cannot establish

  • A granted permission does not guarantee a position fix, a native speed value, or a particular source of location data. A web page cannot override device or browser restrictions.
  • The displayed location accuracy is not an error bound for speed. A device-specific speed comparison needs a reference measurement; no certified accuracy follows from the browser reading alone.
  • Background pauses and gaps can leave distance or average speed incomplete. The trip summary covers accepted readings and does not provide a saved route.
  • Boat readings are speed over ground. They do not separate currents from movement through water or replace marine navigation instruments.
  • My User Agent helps describe a browser environment. It cannot check a location sensor, restore permission, or verify the hardware behind a browser string.
  • Do not operate the controls while driving or navigating a vessel. Configure and troubleshoot while safely stopped; use appropriate vehicle and navigation instruments.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the GPS speedometer show -- instead of zero?

The tool has no usable current speed. A valid device-reported zero is a measurement; a missing speed stays unavailable. If the browser gives no speed, the fallback needs meaningful position changes and may remain unavailable while stationary.

Why is location still blocked after I press Start?

Start cannot override a site or device permission block. Check Location for the site, the browser app permission, and device Location Services, then return and press Start again.

Why does the browser speedometer stop updating when I switch apps?

These tools pause their location watch while the page is hidden. Return to the page for a fresh reading. They do not provide continuous background tracking.

What should I include in a report about missing GPS speed?

Include the tool URL, exact status, browser and OS versions, permission settings, whether the page was visible, and indoor or outdoor conditions. Add reading age and displayed accuracy if available. Coordinates and a route are unnecessary.
