Website Word Counter

Use this website word counter to compare the main content with all text found in a public page. Review the extracted text, top words and density before relying on the numbers.

This check runs on our server. The address you enter is used only for this check and is not stored.

One page, up to 5 MB of HTML. Scripts do not run.

How to use the Website Word Counter

  1. Enter a public page URL.
  2. Complete the robot check and press Count words.
  3. Choose Main content or All page text. Review the extracted text, switch Hide common words in the keyword table as needed, and use Copy or Download .txt to save the selected text.

How words and keyword density are calculated

Our server fetches the HTML and removes scripts, styles, embedded objects and explicitly hidden content. Main content uses the largest main, article or role=main container. If none exists, it falls back to the body. Navigation, header, footer, aside and form elements are removed from that selection. All page text keeps ordinary site navigation and other text outside the main content.

The browser applies the same text statistics logic as the existing Text Statistics tool. Keyword density is the number of occurrences of a word divided by the selected text word count, multiplied by 100. Hiding common words changes the table, not the total word count. Reading time assumes 238 words per minute and speaking time 150 words per minute.

Examples of page word counts

  • If the extracted main text has 200 words and a word occurs four times, its density is 2.00%.
  • A 1,190-word main text has an estimated reading time of five minutes at 238 words per minute.
  • A menu and footer can make All page text longer than Main content. This is expected; inspect both text selections if the difference looks wrong.

Review the extraction before comparing pages

Sites do not all mark their main content consistently. A product page can place useful specifications outside its article, and a discussion page can contain several article elements. The tool chooses a container heuristically; it does not understand which words are useful to your reader.

Read the Extracted text field to check what was counted. A low count can mean that the response contains little content, that JavaScript adds the text later, or that a consent or login page was returned. Compare like-for-like selections when reviewing several pages.

Word count is not a ranking target

More words do not automatically make a page more useful or improve its ranking. Keyword density describes the selected text; it is not a recommended target. Use the figures to find repeated wording, check editing scope or estimate reading time. For pasted text, use Text Statistics. For heading structure, use Heading Checker.

Limitations

  • The HTML response is limited to 5 MB, with a 15-second request timeout. Each extracted text selection is limited to 2 MB.
  • JavaScript and external stylesheets do not run. CSS-only hidden text can remain in the result, and text inside images is not recognized.
  • The main-content selection is a heuristic. Common-word filtering uses an English list.
  • Reading and speaking times are estimates. Word boundaries can differ across languages and editors.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool count website HTML tags as words?

No. It parses the received HTML and counts the extracted text. Scripts and style blocks are removed before the text is sent to the statistics logic.

What is the difference between Main content and All page text?

Main content selects a likely content container and removes common site furniture. All page text includes navigation, headers, footers and other ordinary text in the received HTML.

What keyword density should I aim for?

The tool does not recommend a target. Density is a descriptive ratio, and repeating a term to hit a percentage can make a page harder to read.

Why is the count lower than the text I see in my browser?

JavaScript may add content after the initial response, or the extraction may choose the wrong container. Review Extracted text and compare both selections.
