BPM Counter

Tap along with a song, exercise pace or rhythm to estimate beats per minute. Recent tap intervals are averaged after unusually uneven taps are filtered out.

Tap a beat

Tap at least twice. Space works while the tap button has focus. A gap of 3 seconds starts a new count.

How to use BPM Counter

  1. Listen for the beat you want to measure.
  2. Press Tap beat at least twice. Keep tapping for a steadier estimate.
  3. Read the BPM beside the number of taps. Space activates the button when it has keyboard focus.
  4. Press Reset to clear the count. A pause longer than 3 seconds also starts a new sequence.

From tap intervals to beats per minute

BPM equals 60,000 divided by the average interval in milliseconds. Taps 500 milliseconds apart correspond to 120 BPM. The counter uses up to the most recent 32 taps and filters intervals far from their median before averaging.

Your tapping defines what counts as a beat. Tapping on every second beat halves the displayed rate. Start again if you lose the pulse or switch to a different rhythmic level.

Use a few bars for a steadier reading

The first two taps provide only one interval. Continue through a short phrase to reduce the effect of one early or late tap. A live performance may speed up or slow down, so a changing number can reflect either the music or your timing.

For an audio-file estimate, try BPM & Key Finder. To hear a chosen tempo, open Online Metronome.

Before you download

  • The result depends on human timing and the beat level you choose.
  • A gap longer than 3 seconds resets the sequence, so very slow tapping is not retained.
  • No audio is recorded or analyzed by the tap counter.

Frequently asked questions

How many taps do I need?

Two taps produce an estimate. More steady taps give the counter more intervals to average, up to the latest 32 taps.

Can I use the keyboard?

Yes. Focus the Tap beat button with Tab and press Space at each beat. Avoid holding the key down.

Why does the number change as I tap?

Each new interval changes the recent average. Human timing varies, and some recordings do not keep a constant tempo.

Does it listen through my microphone?

No. The counter measures button press times. It does not request microphone access.
