WAV to MP3

Make an MP3 copy of a WAV recording for sharing or playback. Choose the bitrate and channel count while the original WAV remains on your device.

Audio and transcripts stay on your device. Processing runs in your browser.

WAV. Up to 100 MiB per file (50 MiB on touch devices), 1800 seconds. Decoded audio memory limits also apply.

    Settings

Bitrate applies to MP3 and AAC. WAV uses 16-bit PCM; FLAC is lossless. OGG uses quality-based encoding.

How to use WAV to MP3

    1. Choose your WAV file from your device. The page checks the extension, file header and readable duration.
    2. The output format is fixed to MP3 for this converter.
    3. Set the sample rate and mono or stereo channels. Set a bitrate for MP3 or M4A output.
    4. Press Convert audio. The processing engine loads only when needed.
    5. Play the result and download it when it suits your needs.

Why MP3 is often smaller than PCM WAV

PCM WAV stores a stream of audio samples without perceptual compression. MP3 removes some sound information to reduce the number of bits needed each second. Bitrate controls the size and quality tradeoff.

For example, 60 seconds at 128 kbps contains about 960,000 bytes of encoded audio before tags and container overhead. Actual size depends on encoder behavior and metadata. Mono can be useful for speech; stereo preserves left and right channels in music.

    A practical workflow

Use WAV to MP3 when a receiving app requests MP3. Convert a short recording first, listen to the loudest and quietest passages, and keep both the source and the result until you have checked playback.

To remove an unwanted section from an MP3 copy, open MP3 Cutter. To reduce the bitrate of an existing MP3, use MP3 Compressor.

    Before you download

    • Only a readable, supported audio stream can be converted. Encrypted files and damaged media are unsupported.
    • Large files may exceed browser memory even when their compressed size fits the displayed limit.
    • Changing format does not guarantee a smaller file or better sound. Output tags and artwork may differ from the source.

    Frequently asked questions

Which bitrate should I use for a WAV recording?

Start with 128 kbps for ordinary speech or 192 kbps for music, then listen to the preview. Choose a higher bitrate if cymbals, ambience or other detail sounds damaged.

    Is my WAV file uploaded?

No. The file is read and processed in your browser. The audio engine downloads from this site, but the selected media is not sent to a server.

    Can I choose mono output?

Yes. Choose Mono under Channels. This downmixes the recording into one channel; it does not isolate a voice or remove background music.

Why can a file fail below the size limit?

Compressed size does not describe decoded memory use. Duration, sample rate, channels, codec support and available browser memory also affect whether processing succeeds.
