M4A to MP3

Convert an M4A recording into an MP3 copy for an app or player that needs MP3. Select bitrate, sample rate and mono or stereo output.

Audio and transcripts stay on your device. Processing runs in your browser.

M4A. Up to 100 MiB per file (50 MiB on touch devices), 1800 seconds. Decoded audio memory limits also apply.

    Settings

Bitrate applies to MP3 and AAC. WAV uses 16-bit PCM; FLAC is lossless. OGG uses quality-based encoding.

No account or daily usage quota. File and device limits protect your browser from running out of memory.

How to use M4A to MP3

    1. Choose your M4A file from your device. The page checks the extension, file header and readable duration.
    2. The output format is fixed to MP3 for this converter.
    3. Set the sample rate and mono or stereo channels. Set a bitrate for MP3 or M4A output.
    4. Press Convert audio. The processing engine loads only when needed.
    5. Play the result and download it when it suits your needs.

M4A is a container, not a single codec

An M4A file commonly contains AAC, which is lossy, or ALAC, which is lossless. The tool decodes the supported audio stream and writes MP3. The filename alone does not identify its codec, and browser decoding support varies.

Re-encoding AAC to MP3 adds another lossy stage. Keep the M4A original if storage and compatibility allow it. ALAC input also loses information when encoded as MP3. DRM-protected recordings cannot be converted here.

    A practical workflow

Use M4A to MP3 when a receiving app requests MP3. Convert a short recording first, listen to the loudest and quietest passages, and keep both the source and the result until you have checked playback.

To remove an unwanted section from an MP3 copy, open MP3 Cutter. To reduce the bitrate of an existing MP3, use MP3 Compressor.

    Before you download

    • Only a readable, supported audio stream can be converted. Encrypted files and damaged media are unsupported.
    • Large files may exceed browser memory even when their compressed size fits the displayed limit.
    • Changing format does not guarantee a smaller file or better sound. Output tags and artwork may differ from the source.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does one M4A file open while another fails?

M4A files can contain different codecs or encryption. A browser may decode AAC but lack support for a particular ALAC recording. Use an unencrypted file with a codec supported by your browser.

    Is my M4A file uploaded?

No. The file is read and processed in your browser. The audio engine downloads from this site, but the selected media is not sent to a server.

    Can I choose mono output?

Yes. Choose Mono under Channels. This downmixes the recording into one channel; it does not isolate a voice or remove background music.

Why can a file fail below the size limit?

Compressed size does not describe decoded memory use. Duration, sample rate, channels, codec support and available browser memory also affect whether processing succeeds.
