How to convert minutes to decimal hours for a timesheet

Payroll and invoicing systems want 7.75 hours, not 7 hours 45 minutes. Divide the minutes by 60, round the way your employer asks, and split shared time by percentage when one block belongs to more than one client.

Why 7.45 hours is not 7 hours 45 minutes

A timesheet that records 7 hours 45 minutes as 7.45 underpays the shift. Forty-five minutes is three quarters of an hour, so the right figure is 7.75. The gap is 0.3 hours a day, or 1.5 hours over a five-day week.

The same slip happens with smaller amounts: 40 minutes is 0.67 hours, not 0.40. Billing by the hour adds another problem, because one call or task often has to be split between two clients by percentage.

Three tools for the three steps

The Time Converter turns minutes into hours with exact factors: an hour is 60 minutes, so 45 minutes is 0.75 hours and 1.5 hours is 90 minutes. A table under the result gives the same value in every other unit. These are the figures most timesheets need:

MinutesDecimal hours

300.5

When a block of time is shared, the Time Percentage Calculator takes the percentage and the time in hours, minutes, and seconds. 25% of 1 hour 30 minutes is 22 minutes 30 seconds, or 0.375 hours. It also works the other way: 40 minutes is 8.33% of an 8-hour day.

To see what the hours are worth, the Salary Calculator converts pay between hourly, weekly, monthly, and yearly amounts. $25 an hour at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $52,000 a year. Its figures are before tax and leave out overtime.

Convert minutes to decimal hours

  1. Split the time into whole hours and leftover minutes, for example 7 hours 40 minutes.
  2. Divide the minutes by 60: 40 ÷ 60 = 0.6667.
  3. Add the whole hours: 7 + 0.6667 = 7.6667 hours.
  4. Round the way your employer or client asks, often to two decimals: 7.67 hours.
  5. If the time is shared, take the agreed percentage of it in the Time Percentage Calculator before you round.
  6. Multiply the decimal hours by your hourly rate to get the pay for that time.

What the conversions leave out

  • Rounding rules differ. Some employers round to the nearest quarter hour, others to the minute, so follow theirs.
  • The Time Percentage Calculator works with lengths of time, not clock times. Work out the hours between two clock times first.
  • The Salary Calculator shows pay before tax and deductions, without overtime.
