How to use the Sales Tax Calculator

  1. Choose Add tax to a price or Take tax out of a total.
  2. Enter the Price and the Tax rate, and change the currency symbol if you like.
  3. Press Calculate. The tax amount appears first, with the net price and the total.

How it works

adding: tax = net × rate, gross = net × (1 + rate)
removing: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate), tax = gross − net

The rate is a decimal: 8.25% is 0.0825. Removing tax divides; it is not the same as taking 8.25% off the total.

Examples

  • $80 at 8.25%: tax $6.60, total $86.60.
  • A $108.25 receipt at 8.25% tax: net price $100.00, tax $8.25.

A common mistake when removing tax

Taking 8.25% off $108.25 gives $99.32, not $100. The tax was calculated on the net price, so you have to divide by 1.0825 to reverse it. The Take tax out of a total tab does this for you.

Limitations

  • You enter the rate. Local rates change and some items are taxed differently.
  • Rounding is done once on the total. Stores that round per item can differ by a cent.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. $80 × 0.0825 = $6.60.

How do I find the price before tax?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.

Does this work for VAT?

Yes. VAT and GST use the same math. Enter your country's rate.
