Gauge pressure and absolute pressure

A tire gauge reads the pressure above the surrounding air (gauge pressure). A barometer reads the total pressure (absolute pressure). They differ by about 1 atm at sea level. This converter changes units only; it doesn't add or remove atmospheric pressure, so a gauge reading stays a gauge reading.

Limitations

  • Converts units only, not between gauge and absolute pressure.
  • mmHg and inHg use the conventional values at 0 °C and standard gravity.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert psi to bar?

Multiply by 0.0689476, or divide by 14.5038. For example, 32 psi is about 2.21 bar.

What is 1 atm in kPa?

One standard atmosphere is exactly 101.325 kPa, or 1.01325 bar.

Are mmHg and torr the same?

Almost. 1 Torr is 1/760 of an atmosphere (133.3224 Pa) and 1 mmHg is 133.3224 Pa; they differ by less than one part in a million.
