Torque Converter

This torque converter changes newton meters to pound-feet, lb-in to N·m, and kgf·m to either. Use it to read a torque wrench, a bolt spec, or an engine's torque figure in the unit you know.

How to use the Torque Converter

  1. Type the Value you want to convert.
  2. Pick the unit it is in under From, and the unit you want under To. The swap button flips them.
  3. The answer updates as you type. The table below it shows the same value in every other unit, each with its own copy button.

How it works

1 lbf·ft = 0.3048 m × 4.4482216 N = 1.3558179 N·m
1 lbf·in = 0.1129848 N·m (1/12 lbf·ft)
1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m
result = value × from-unit (N·m) ÷ to-unit (N·m)

Examples

  • 100 N·m = 73.756215 lbf·ft.
  • 80 lbf·ft = 108.465436 N·m (a typical wheel nut).
  • 10 N·m = 88.507458 lbf·in.
  • 1 kgf·m = 7.233014 lbf·ft.

Torque is not energy

A newton meter of torque and a joule of energy have the same base units, but they measure different things. Torque is a twisting force at a distance; energy is work done over a distance in the direction of the force. That is why this converter keeps torque separate from the energy converter, and why engineers write torque as N·m rather than J.

Limitations

  • Values are converted as given; the sign (direction of rotation) is kept.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert N·m to lb-ft?

Multiply by 0.73756. For example, 100 N·m is about 73.8 lb-ft.

How do I convert lb-ft to N·m?

Multiply by 1.35582. For example, 80 lb-ft is about 108.5 N·m.

Are lb-ft and ft-lb the same?

For torque, people use both names for the same unit. Engineers often prefer lb-ft for torque and ft-lb for work or energy.
