Barcode Scanner Online

Read a barcode from a photo, a screenshot, or your camera. EAN, UPC, Code 128, Code 39, ITF, Codabar, and 2D codes are decoded in your browser, and EAN and UPC check digits are verified.

Decoded in your browser. Images and camera video never leave your device.

PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF. The image stays on your device.

How to use the Barcode Scanner

    1. Choose a photo, drop it on the box, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). On a phone or laptop you can press Scan with camera.
    2. Read the result: the barcode type, the decoded value, and notes such as whether the check digit is right.
    3. Press Copy to take the value into a spreadsheet, a stock system, or a search.

    How it works

    • Where the browser ships the BarcodeDetector API, as Chrome does on Android and macOS, the scanner uses it. Everywhere else it loads the ZXing decoder (zxing-cpp compiled to WebAssembly, about 1 MB) on the first scan. Both can return several barcodes from one image.
    • ZXing also tries the image turned on its side and with light and dark swapped, so sideways and inverted barcodes are found too.
    • Photos are scaled to 1,600 pixels on the long side and camera frames to 1,000 before decoding.
    • For EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, and UPC-E the GS1 check digit is worked out again and compared. An EAN-13 that starts with 978 or 979 is marked as a book number, and a UPC-E code is shown with its full UPC-A form.

    Examples

    • A photo of a book's back cover returns EAN-13 9780306406157, marked as an ISBN.
    • The UPC-E code 04252614 from a small can is shown with its UPC-A form 042100005264.
    • A test print of a label sheet: one photo of three labels returns all three values, so you can compare them with your list before you print the whole run.

    Limitations

    • Blurry, very small, or cut-off barcodes may not decode. The white margin on both sides of the bars has to be in the picture.
    • MSI and Pharmacode barcodes are not read.
    • The scanner reads the number and the type. It does not look up products, prices, or who owns the number.
    • Camera scanning needs HTTPS and your permission.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I scan a barcode from a picture?

Upload the photo or paste a screenshot. The decoded value and the barcode type appear under the box, one entry for each barcode found.

Can I scan a barcode with my laptop camera?

Yes. Press Scan with camera and allow access. Hold the barcode level and close enough that it fills a good part of the frame.

Does the scanner tell me what product it is?

No. It reads the number and the format. A product lookup needs the database of the company that owns the number.

    Are my images uploaded?

No. Images and camera video are decoded in your browser.
