App Icon Generator

Upload one square image and get every app icon size that iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, macOS, and Android ask for. The files come sorted into the AppIcon.appiconset and mipmap folders that Xcode and Android Studio expect, packed in one ZIP.

Your image is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Your icon

PNG, JPG, WebP, or AVIF, ideally 1024 × 1024 pixels. Up to 50 MB. Ctrl+V pastes.

    Android adaptive icon

The background color fills transparent areas of the iPhone, iPad, and watch icons, which the App Store requires to be opaque. Android uses it behind the adaptive icon.

How to use the App Icon Generator

    1. Add a square image by choosing, dropping, or pasting it. A 1024 × 1024 PNG gives the sharpest icons.
    2. Tick the platforms you build for. iPhone, iPad, and Android are on by default; Apple Watch and macOS are optional.
    3. Pick a background color. It fills transparent pixels in the iPhone, iPad, and watch icons, and Android draws it behind the adaptive icon.
    4. For Android, choose Safe zone for a logo, or Fill the layer when your artwork covers the whole square.
    5. Look at the launcher previews under the result, then download the ZIP and copy the folders into your project.

    How it works

Apple lists icon sizes in points. The pixel size is the point size times the screen scale:

    pixels = points × scale

    • A 60 pt iPhone home screen icon at @3x is 180 px, and the 83.5 pt iPad Pro icon at @2x is 167 px.
    • Each size is scaled down from your original in halving steps, which keeps thin lines from turning jagged, and saved as a lossless PNG.
    • When two slots need the same pixels, such as 120 px for the iPhone home screen (60 pt @2x) and Spotlight (40 pt @3x), the file is written once and Contents.json points to it twice. Xcode does the same.
    • The 1024 px App Store icon is marked ios-marketing. App Store Connect rejects an icon with an alpha channel, so transparent pixels in the iOS and watchOS sets are filled with your background color. Android and macOS files keep their transparency.
    • The Android launcher icon is 48 dp, which comes to 48, 72, 96, 144, and 192 px in the mdpi to xxxhdpi folders. The round icon is the same image cut to a circle.
    • Android 8 and later build the icon from a 108 dp foreground layer over a background color, and each launcher masks the result to its own shape. Only the middle 72 dp is sure to be visible, so Safe zone shrinks your image to two thirds of the layer.

    Examples

    • A 1024 × 1024 logo with iPhone and iPad ticked gives 13 PNG files and a Contents.json with 18 entries.
    • Adding Android brings the total to 29 PNG files. The xxxhdpi folder gets a 192 px ic_launcher.png, a 192 px ic_launcher_round.png, and a 432 px ic_launcher_foreground.png whose artwork is 288 px wide in Safe zone mode.
    • A logo on a transparent background with white as the fill color comes out on white in the iOS set, while the Android and macOS icons stay transparent.
    • A 1200 × 900 photo is refused because it is not square. Crop it first.

    Limitations

    • The image has to be square and at least 192 × 192 pixels. Anything under 1024 px gets enlarged for the bigger icons and looks soft, and the tool warns you when that happens.
    • At 20 or 29 px, fine detail and small text turn to mush. If the small icons look muddy, simplify the artwork.
    • Android 13 themed (monochrome) icons are not made here. Add the monochrome layer in Android Studio if your app needs one.
    • macOS icons are saved as uploaded, with no rounded shape or shadow added.
    • Xcode 14 and later can also work from a single 1024 px icon. This tool writes the full list of sizes, which every Xcode version reads.
    • Animated images use their first frame only.

    Frequently asked questions

What size should an app icon be?

Start from 1024 × 1024 pixels. That is the App Store icon size, and every smaller iOS and Android icon can be scaled down from it without losing sharpness.

Why does the App Store reject my icon for transparency?

App Store Connect does not accept an app icon with an alpha channel. This tool fills transparent pixels in the iPhone, iPad, and watch icons with the background color you pick, so those files are fully opaque.

What is an Android adaptive icon?

Since Android 8, a launcher icon is built from a foreground layer and a background layer, each 108 dp square. The launcher crops them to a circle, squircle, or rounded square, so anything important belongs inside the middle 72 dp.

How do I add the icons to Xcode?

Open Assets.xcassets, delete the existing AppIcon set, and drag the AppIcon.appiconset folder from the ZIP into the asset list. Xcode reads Contents.json and puts each file in its slot.

Where do the Android icon files go?

Copy the folders inside android/res into app/src/main/res and replace the old ic_launcher files. In a project made by Android Studio, android:icon and android:roundIcon in the manifest already point to them.

    Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. Resizing and building the ZIP both happen in your browser, so the image stays on your device.

Often used together with App Icon Generator.

    • Image Resizer

Resizes images to exact pixels or a percentage, one at a time or in batches.

    • Image Cropper

Crops images with a draggable box, aspect ratio presets, and exact pixel fields.
