How to remove metadata from an SVG

  1. Paste the SVG code or drop the .svg file on the text box.
  2. Leave Keep <title> and <desc> ticked unless you are sure they are not needed.
  3. Check the cleaned code and the preview.
  4. Copy it or download it as a new .svg file.

How it works

The tool runs only four cleanup steps and nothing else:

  • remove comments, such as <!-- Created with Inkscape -->;
  • remove the <metadata> element with its RDF, Dublin Core, and license data;
  • remove elements and attributes in editor namespaces (inkscape:, sodipodi:, sketch:, Illustrator's i: and x:) and their xmlns declarations;
  • remove data-* attributes that export tools add, such as data-name.

Path data, numbers, ids, and styles are left exactly as written, so the file draws identically. The output is indented for easy reading.

Examples

  • The Inkscape sample shrinks from 2,089 to 1,221 bytes. Its <sodipodi:namedview>, the RDF block, the layer labels, and data-name="Hills" are gone.
  • The path d="M 0.00000000,46.000000 ..." is unchanged, long zeros included. For shorter numbers use the SVG Optimizer.
  • <title>Sunset over hills</title> stays.

Why remove SVG metadata?

Design apps store the document name, file paths on your computer, layer names, zoom level, and sometimes your name inside every exported SVG. None of it affects the drawing. Removing it makes the file smaller and stops those details from ending up on a public website or in a repository.

Limitations

  • The whole file is rewritten with standard indentation, so the spacing differs from the original.
  • Text in <title> and <desc> is kept by default. Untick the box to remove it.
  • Files up to 5 MB.

Frequently asked questions

What metadata is inside an SVG file?

Usually a metadata block with RDF and license information, editor settings such as Inkscape's zoom and window size, layer names, the original file name, and comments added by the exporting app.

Will removing metadata change my drawing?

No. Only comments, the metadata element, editor-namespace data, and data attributes are removed. Shapes, paths, colors, and ids stay as they were.

Should I remove the title and desc elements?

Usually not. Screen readers announce the title of an SVG used as an image, so it helps accessibility. Remove them only for purely decorative graphics.

Can I still open the file in Inkscape?

Yes. Inkscape opens it as a plain SVG. Layer names and editor settings will be gone.
