How to use the Open Graph Generator

  1. Enter the page title, description, and URL.
  2. Add the image URL and any optional values such as image alt text, site name, or locale.
  3. Copy the generated tags into the head section and test the page with the platform that will read them.

How it works

Open Graph tags are meta property tags that describe how a link should appear when someone shares it. The generator builds the standard fields used by most platforms that support Open Graph.

  • og:title and og:description control the preview text.
  • og:url identifies the shared page.
  • og:image points to the preview image, and optional width, height, and alt tags add detail.
  • og:type, og:site_name, and og:locale help platforms classify the page.

This generator runs in your browser, so nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

Examples

  • A blog post can use og:type set to article with the article title, summary, and hero image.
  • A home page often uses website as the type and includes the brand name in og:site_name.
  • An ecommerce page can use a product image and alt text so the preview still makes sense when the image does not load.

Limitations

  • The tool cannot verify whether the image URL is reachable, large enough, or allowed by the target platform.
  • Platforms cache preview data. After you update a page, you may need to refresh the cached card on the platform side.
  • Each platform can crop or rewrite parts of the preview, so the generated tags improve consistency but do not force one exact layout.

Frequently asked questions

Where are Open Graph tags used?

They are commonly used by Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, and many messaging apps that build a card preview when a link is shared.

Do I need both Open Graph and Twitter tags?

Often yes. Many platforms read Open Graph, but X and some other tools still look for Twitter card tags as a fallback or override.

What image size should I use?

A common target is 1200 by 630 pixels, but always check the platform documentation for the latest recommendation.
