How to use the Sitemap URL Extractor

  1. Enter a sitemap URL, or enter a domain if you want the tool to find the sitemap first.

How it works

This check runs on our server. The address you enter is used only for this check and is not stored.

The tool fetches the sitemap, decompresses .xml.gz files when needed, and follows sitemap indexes recursively. Each sitemap is capped at 50 MB uncompressed, with a total limit of 50 sitemaps and 50,000 URLs.

Every <loc> URL is extracted, and lastmod is included when the sitemap provides it.

Examples

  • A single sitemap file can return a flat list of page URLs plus lastmod values.
  • A sitemap index can expand into several child sitemap files before the final URL list is shown.
  • A compressed sitemap.xml.gz file is decompressed first, then parsed the same way as plain XML.

Limitations

  • The extractor reads sitemap files only. It does not verify whether each listed page returns 200.
  • The recursion limit is 50 sitemap files and 50,000 URLs.
  • Malformed XML or oversized compressed files are rejected instead of being partially parsed.

Can this read a sitemap index?

Yes. The tool follows sitemap indexes and combines the URLs from each child sitemap until it reaches the safety limits.

Does it support compressed sitemap files?

Yes. .xml.gz files are decompressed on the server before parsing.

Can I check whether sitemap URLs are broken too?

Not in this tool. Extract the list first, then use a page or link checker for spot checks.
