How to use the CSV Cleaner

  1. Paste CSV text or upload a CSV or text file.
  2. Choose the cleanup options you need, such as Trim cells, Remove empty rows, or Remove duplicate rows.
  3. Pick the output delimiter if you want to normalize the file to commas, semicolons, or tabs.
  4. Copy or download the cleaned CSV.

How it works

The cleaner parses the CSV first, so quoted fields, embedded commas, and line breaks inside quotes are handled as CSV data instead of raw text. If the delimiter is set to automatic, it is detected from the input before parsing.

  • Trim cells removes spaces around each cell value.
  • Remove duplicate rows compares whole rows after any selected trimming.
  • Remove empty columns checks every column across all rows and drops the ones that are blank all the way down.
  • Fill ragged rows pads short rows with empty cells so every row has the same width.
  • The cleaned output is written back as CSV with normalized line endings.

Examples

  • Rows a , b , an empty row, and a , b with trim, remove empty, and dedupe become one row: a,b.
  • If the input uses semicolons but you set comma output, a;b;c becomes a,b,c.
  • A short row can be padded to match the header width when Fill ragged rows is turned on.

Limitations

  • This tool cleans CSV structure. It does not sort rows or validate business rules inside the data.
  • If a file is not valid CSV, parsing can fail before cleanup starts.
  • Duplicate detection compares whole rows, not just one chosen column.
  • Inputs up to 10 MB are supported.

Frequently asked questions

What does trim cells mean?

It removes spaces at the start and end of every cell, so values such as apple become apple.

Can it convert semicolon-separated data into comma-separated CSV?

Yes. Leave delimiter detection on automatic or set the input format yourself, then choose comma as the output delimiter.

Will it remove duplicate rows only after trimming?

Yes. If you turn on Trim cells, row comparison uses the trimmed cell values, which helps catch duplicates that only differ by stray spaces.
