How to convert SVG to WebP

  1. Paste the SVG code or drop the file.
  2. Choose a scale or an exact width or height.
  3. Keep the background transparent, or untick it and pick a color.
  4. Set the quality (92 by default), check the preview, and press Download WebP.

How it works

  • The SVG is drawn by the browser at the exact target size, then encoded as WebP with libwebp compiled to WebAssembly. Safari, Chrome, and Firefox all produce the same file, and the result is checked for the WebP signature.
  • Transparency is stored in the WebP's alpha channel at full precision.
  • Quality affects the color data. At 92, flat colors and edges look like the PNG version at a fraction of the size.

Examples

  • A 24 × 24 icon at 4x becomes a 96 × 96 WebP with a transparent background.
  • The 64 × 64 sample icon at 8x becomes a 512 × 512 WebP. Compare its size with the PNG from SVG to PNG: gradients like the sample's sky are where WebP saves the most.
  • A 1200 px wide hero illustration for a blog, with exact width 1200 and quality 85.

When to use WebP instead of the SVG

Keep SVG when you can: it is sharp at every size and often smaller. A raster WebP is the better choice for very complex SVGs (thousands of paths, heavy filters) that are slow for browsers to draw, for places that don't accept SVG such as some CMS uploads and social networks, and when you need one fixed-size image for a slide or an email.

Limitations

  • Linked images and web fonts in the SVG are not loaded.
  • WebP is lossy here. For an exact lossless copy, use SVG to PNG and then the Image to WebP tool, which turns PNG into lossless WebP.
  • Up to 8000 pixels on each side.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP keep the transparent background of my SVG?

Yes. Keep Transparent background ticked and the empty areas stay transparent in the WebP.

Is WebP smaller than PNG for converted SVGs?

Usually, especially with gradients and shading. For tiny flat icons the difference is small, and PNG may even win.

Do all browsers support WebP images?

Yes. Every current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari shows WebP.

Can I get a lossless WebP from an SVG?

Convert to PNG first with SVG to PNG, then use Image to WebP, which turns PNG into lossless WebP with identical pixels.
