How to convert a Markdown file to PDF

  2. Pick the page size, font size, margins, and line spacing.
  3. Add a title and page numbers if you want them.
  4. Press Create PDF, check the preview of page 1, and download the file.

How it works

The Markdown is split into blocks with the marked parser, the same one the Markdown to HTML converter uses, and each block is turned into a pdfmake element instead of HTML:

  • # to #### headings become bold headings at four sizes;
  • lists keep their numbers and nesting, and task list items show [x] or [ ];
  • tables get a bold header row and keep the column alignment from the :---: markers;
  • code blocks and inline code get a gray background; block quotes get a bar on the left;
  • links stay clickable when they start with http, https, or mailto; other link types are kept as plain text.

becomes a PDF with a large heading, a bulleted list with a bold phrase and an italic word, and a three-column table whose number columns are aligned right. The sample in the tool shows every element at once.

Limitations

  • Images in the Markdown are not added; an [image] note marks where each was. The tool never fetches files from other sites.
  • Raw HTML inside the Markdown is printed as text, not rendered.
  • Roboto covers Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic. Other scripts are refused with the first character that can't be shown.
  • Code uses the same font as the text, not a monospace one.

Does it support GitHub-flavored Markdown?

Yes. Tables, task lists, strikethrough, and fenced code blocks from GitHub-flavored Markdown are all converted.

Are links clickable in the PDF?

Yes, for web and email links (http, https, and mailto). Other kinds of links are shown as plain text for safety.

Why are my images missing from the PDF?

Images in Markdown point to files on other servers or on your computer. The tool does not fetch anything, so it marks where each image was instead.

Can I convert a README.md to PDF?
