    How to clean a document's properties

    1. Choose a DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODT, ODS, or ODP file, or drop it on the box.
    2. Read the table of properties. Names of people and companies are marked in red.
    3. Read any warning about comments or tracked changes, which are part of the text and stay.
    4. Download the clean copy. It ends in -clean and keeps the original file type.

    How it works

    Office files are ZIP archives of XML files, and the properties sit in their own parts:

    • DOCX, XLSX, PPTX: docProps/core.xml holds the title, author, last modified by, revision, and dates; docProps/app.xml holds the company, manager, template, app name, and total editing time; docProps/custom.xml holds properties added by apps or your organization.
    • ODT, ODS, ODP: meta.xml holds the same kind of data.

    The tool empties core.xml, app.xml, and meta.xml, deletes custom.xml along with its entries in the package's index, and copies every other part as it is. The document's text, images, and styles are untouched.

    The clean copy opens in Word with the same text, and File, Info shows no author, company, or dates.

    Limitations

    • Comments and tracked changes stay, because they are part of the document. The tool counts them; delete comments and accept or reject changes in your editor first.
    • Old .doc, .xls, and .ppt files use a different format. Save them in the new format first.
    • Password-protected files can't be opened.
    • For PDFs, use the PDF Metadata Remover.

    How do I remove the author name from a Word document?

    Open the .docx file here and download the clean copy. The author, last modified by, and company fields are all empty in it.

    What metadata does a Word document contain?

    Usually the author, the last person who saved it, the company, the creation and save dates, a revision number, the total editing time, and the template it was based on.

    Will cleaning change the content or formatting?

    No. Only the property files are emptied. The text, images, tables, and styles are copied exactly as they were.

    Does Word add the metadata back when I edit the file?

    Yes. Word writes your name and the dates again the next time you save it. Clean the file as the last step before sending it.
