      How to rotate a PDF and save it

      1. Choose a PDF or drop it on the box. Each page appears as a thumbnail.
      2. To turn the whole document, press Left, Right, or 180° under Turn every page.
      3. To turn only some pages, use the buttons under those pages, or tick them and press Turn left or Turn right.
      4. Press Save PDF and download the file, which ends in -rotated.pdf.

      How it works

      Every PDF page has a rotation value that tells viewers how to show it: 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees clockwise. Turning a page right adds 90 to that value, turning it left takes 90 away, and the result wraps around at 360. So a page stored at 90 and turned right twice ends at 270.

      pdf-lib writes the new values into a copy of the file. The page's text and images are not touched, which is why rotating a PDF this way never lowers its quality and the file size barely changes.

      Examples

      • A landscape table scanned in portrait: turn that page right once (90 degrees clockwise).
      • A page fed upside down through the scanner: press 180° or turn it twice.
      • A whole document exported sideways: press Left under Turn every page, and every page moves 90 degrees counterclockwise.

      Why a viewer's rotate button is not enough

      The rotate button in most PDF viewers only turns the page on your screen for this session. Close the file and it opens sideways again, and anyone you send it to sees it sideways too. Saving the rotation into the file fixes it for everyone.

      Limitations

      • Pages turn in steps of 90 degrees. Straightening a slightly crooked scan needs an image editor.
      • One PDF at a time, up to 100 MB.
      • Password-protected PDFs can't be opened.

      How do I rotate only one page of a PDF?

      Use the turn buttons under that page's thumbnail, then press Save PDF. The other pages stay as they are.

      Will rotating the PDF reduce its quality?

      No. Only the rotation value of each page changes. Text, images, and fonts are copied unchanged.

      Can I rotate a PDF by 45 degrees?

      No. PDF pages can only be turned in steps of 90 degrees. Any other angle means redrawing the page content.

      Why does my PDF open sideways again after I rotated it?

      Your viewer probably turned the page only on screen. Rotate it here and save, and the new rotation is stored in the file.
