    How to watermark a PDF

    1. Choose a PDF or drop it on the box.
    2. Pick Text and type the words, or pick Image and choose a PNG or JPG file.
    3. Set the size, opacity, and rotation. Choose Once, centered or Tiled.
    4. Leave Pages empty for every page, or type pages such as 1, 3-5.
    5. Check the preview, then press Add watermark and download the file.

    How it works

    The watermark is drawn on top of each page's content with the opacity you choose, so the page stays readable underneath. Text uses Helvetica Bold, a font built into every PDF reader. An image is embedded once and reused on every page, so a logo does not make the file much bigger.

    The watermark is centered on the visible page and turned by the rotation you set, counterclockwise. Tiled mode repeats it in a grid of offset rows that covers the whole page, which makes it much harder to crop out. On pages stored sideways, the watermark is turned with the page so it lands where you expect.

    Examples

    • CONFIDENTIAL at 60 pt, red, 25% opacity, 45 degrees, once: a diagonal stamp across the middle of each page.
    • DRAFT at 36 pt, gray, 15% opacity, tiled: a light pattern over the whole page, hard to remove by cropping.
    • A company logo PNG at 40% of the page width and 20% opacity on page 1 only: type 1 in Pages.

    Limitations

    • Text watermarks use a standard PDF font, so only Latin letters, digits, and punctuation work. For other scripts, make an image of the text and use an image watermark.
    • A watermark is added content, not protection. Anyone with a PDF editor can delete it, and it does not stop copying or printing.
    • One PDF at a time, up to 100 MB; password-protected files can't be opened.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I use my logo as a PDF watermark?

    Yes. Pick Image and choose your logo. A PNG with a transparent background looks best; set the width as a share of the page and lower the opacity.

    Can the watermark be removed?

    Yes, with a PDF editor, because it is a separate piece of content on top of the page. A tiled watermark is much more work to remove than a single one.

    Will the watermark hide the text on my pages?

    Not at a low opacity. Between 15% and 30% the page stays easy to read while the mark is still clear.

    Why can't I type my watermark in Arabic, Persian, or Chinese?

    The text is drawn with Helvetica, a standard font that PDF readers include, and it has only Latin letters. Save the text as a PNG image and use it as an image watermark instead.
