    How to number the pages of a PDF

    1. Choose a PDF or drop it on the box. A preview of the first page appears.
    2. Click one of the six spots to place the numbers, and pick a format.
    3. To leave a cover page without a number, set Start on page to 2. Change First number if the numbering should not start at 1.
    4. Check the preview, flipping through pages with the arrows, then press Add page numbers and download.

    How it works

    Each page gets one line of text drawn on top of its content with Helvetica, one of the fonts every PDF reader has built in, so nothing needs to be embedded. The number on a page is:

    number = first number + (page - start on page)

    and the total in "Page 1 of 12" is the number the last page gets. The text is placed at the chosen distance from the edges of the visible page. Pages stored sideways get their numbers turned with them, so every number reads upright at the bottom or top you picked.

    The preview is the real result: that one page is stamped exactly as it will be saved and drawn by pdf.js.

    • The 3-page sample with format Page 1 of 12 at the bottom center: the pages read Page 1 of 3, Page 2 of 3, and Page 3 of 3.
    • A 12-page report with a cover, Start on page 2, First number 1: the cover has no number, and the rest read 1 to 11. With Page 1 of 12, the last page reads Page 11 of 11.
    • Chapter two of a book that starts at page 41: set First number to 41.

    Limitations

    • The standard Helvetica font only has Latin characters, which is enough for digits and the words Page and of.
    • Numbers are drawn on top of the page. If the page already has content in that corner, move the numbers or increase the distance from the edge.
    • Roman numerals are not offered.
    • One PDF at a time, up to 100 MB; password-protected files can't be opened.

    Frequently asked questions

    How do I add page numbers but skip the first page?

    Set Start on page to 2. The first page gets no number and page 2 shows the first number, which is 1 unless you change it.

    Can I start page numbering at a number other than 1?

    Yes. Type any number in First number. It is printed on the page where numbering starts, and each later page counts up from it.

    Will the page numbers change the rest of my PDF?

    No. The numbers are added as a small piece of text on each page. The existing text, images, and links are copied unchanged.

    Is my PDF uploaded to add the numbers?

    No. The numbers are added in your browser, and the file never leaves your device.
